Oleo Sliding Rail End Stop

OLEO train rail end stop
The rail end stop is intended as the final safety mechanism in a rail line impact. The impact energy is absorbed by friction clamps installed on the rail and on the Oleo hydraulic buffer.

The number of clamps and torque required per clamp is determined by the mass and impact speed of the run-away train. The endstop can accomodate impact masses of up to 3000 tons and speeds of up to 25km/h. The critical aspect in the design of the endstop is the available "stroke". The longer the available stroke, the more energy that can be absorbed.

OLEO Examples of other installations
After impact, the end stop needs to be inspected and recalibrated to its original settings. The rail endstop is virtually maintenance free. The rail is not damaged in any way after repeated impacts and the train does not derail during deceleration after the impact. The deceleration forces are generally kept below 1G for the sake of the passengers on the train.
